Course Information

This 3-session, pre-recorded series designed specifically for Board members that provides the
essentials of what individuals need to know to serve as a volunteer Board member. This
program addresses the most important areas of nonprofit oversight that individuals need to know upon embarking as a volunteer board member.

COURSE 1 – ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES of BOARD MEMBERS

Chapter A – Legal Responsibilities of a Board Member

This chapter covers the basic fiduciary responsibilities of a nonprofit board member. In addition, the material discusses the three legal requirements applicable to board members according to the Ohio Attorney General.

Chapter B – Characteristics of a Strong Board of Directors

This chapter discusses the attributes of good board members and how a nonprofit can identify and recruit volunteers to serve on its board of directors. The chapter also introduces best practices on how to conduct effective board meetings.

COURSE 2 – UNDERSTANDING NONPROFIT FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Chapter A – Nonprofit Financial Statements and Reporting

This chapter presents to board members a set of basic nonprofit financial statements for use for both external and internal financial reporting. The materials include a discussion on restricted revenue and other accounting requirements unique to a nonprofit organization of which a board member needs to be aware.

Chapter B – Financial Oversight and Internal Controls

This chapter discusses the role of board members in basic financial oversight.   The material also provides guidance on financial monitoring, fraud considerations and common internal controls that board members can ensure are used within the nonprofit organization to address financial and fraud risks.

COURSE 3 – FUNDRAISING BY BOARD MEMBERS

This course addresses the role of board members in raising funding for operations and program activities. The materials offer insight on what may challenge board members to participate in raising funds, along with tips to increase their participation and effectiveness in securing revenue. Finally, the increasing impact of technology on fundraising activities is discussed.
